Amsterdam
Day 1 and 2
15.06.2014
I took the overnight bus from Paris to Amsterdam called the I.D. bus, which was actually quite comfortable. If I were a normal human being, and could sleep in moving vehicles, I probably would have slept the whole way. The seats even adjust side to side, to give you space between the person you're sitting with. I got to the train station and made my way to the hostel I was staying at. It was super early in the morning, so I just hung around the restaurant area and did some planning. Once I got to actually check in, I took a little nap to catch up on sleep I missed on the bus. I decided that I would take it easy in Amsterdam and not do as many things as I did in Paris. It was really nice to wander around and meet some cool people. The first day I had dinner at the hostel and met a couple of Canadian guys from Toronto that were really nice. After that I went out to wander the city by night and check out the red light district. People tend to say or think it is a sketchy area, but at no time did I feel unsafe at all. Yes there is everything you're expecting, but because it is legalized and organized, it makes it more normal. I enjoyed walking around, checking out the sites and people watching. You might think that it's mainly teenagers on Europe trips there looking to party, but actually there were people of all ages enjoying everything that Amsterdam had to offer.
I met a nice guy name Simon from South Carolina taking a vacation before going to Kenya to do some volunteer medical work. We decided to go check out some of the attractions together. We started our day at the Vondelpark, took a river cruise and went for a really nice Dutch meal. It's always nice to meet other people to visit attractions and share time with on a trip like this.
