Amsterdam

Day 1 and 2

I took the overnight bus from Paris to Amsterdam called the I.D. bus, which was actually quite comfortable. If I were a normal human being, and could sleep in moving vehicles, I probably would have slept the whole way. The seats even adjust side to side, to give you space between the person you're sitting with. I got to the train station and made my way to the hostel I was staying at. It was super early in the morning, so I just hung around the restaurant area and did some planning. Once I got to actually check in, I took a little nap to catch up on sleep I missed on the bus. I decided that I would take it easy in Amsterdam and not do as many things as I did in Paris. It was really nice to wander around and meet some cool people. The first day I had dinner at the hostel and met a couple of Canadian guys from Toronto that were really nice. After that I went out to wander the city by night and check out the red light district. People tend to say or think it is a sketchy area, but at no time did I feel unsafe at all. Yes there is everything you're expecting, but because it is legalized and organized, it makes it more normal. I enjoyed walking around, checking out the sites and people watching. You might think that it's mainly teenagers on Europe trips there looking to party, but actually there were people of all ages enjoying everything that Amsterdam had to offer.

I met a nice guy name Simon from South Carolina taking a vacation before going to Kenya to do some volunteer medical work. We decided to go check out some of the attractions together. We started our day at the Vondelpark, took a river cruise and went for a really nice Dutch meal. It's always nice to meet other people to visit attractions and share time with on a trip like this.

Final day in Paris

The Louvre

For my last day in Paris I saved the entire day for the Louvre. I really enjoyed it and downloaded an app on my iphone to follow to see all the masterpieces. It didn't take long at all, so I spent the rest of the day seeing almost everything in the museum. It was really enjoyable, and I even took a break to walk the gardens outside in the beautiful weather. After the museum I went to the bus station to head to Amsterdam overnight.

Le Chateau de Versailles, Notre Dame and the Latin Quarter

Day 3 of Paris

On my third day in Paris I went to the Palace of Versailles. Many tour companies offer tours, but you can really easily do this trip on your own. I had a few hiccups on train directions along the way, but eventually made it there and faster than I had planned for.

I know everyone knows that this place is huge, but you cannot imagine how big it is until you really see it. You could get lost in there for days. You can rent bikes and also golf carts to tour the gardens since they are so huge. I chose to walk, and my feet paid for it later.

Here are some pictures from the day.

Impressions of Impressionists

Day 2 of Paris

After sleeping in a bit I used the rest of the morning to do some laundry. It was expensive, but nice to have a new load of clean clothes to wear. After that, I went to Sacre Couer Basilica and the Montmarte area. It was beautiful and had a great view of Paris as well. The Place du Tertre, were all the impressionist artists used to live, study and work on their masterpieces, was jam-packed with artists and tourists viewing them. There was also a Dali museum with mostly sculptures, but I didn't go in because I have to pick and choose which attractions to pay for wisely. I didn't spend too much time there, and would have liked to come back at night, but didn't have enough time. I had a crepe and a caricature drawn and continued walking around.

I ended up walking really far in the opposite direction, so I took a break and had a nice salad and found the train back to the main tourist area. The trains are a bit difficult to navigate, everything is in French and it is definitely not as organized and easy to follow as the system in Seoul. It definitely makes me appreciate the public transit there even more than I already do! I met a nice couple who were also going in the same direction and we took the train together. We are hoping to meet again while in Amsterdam, but working out schedules is difficult sometimes.

I ended up making my way to the Hotel d'Invalides as well as the Eiffel tower again. Paris really is beautiful at night!

Goodybe England, Bonjour Paris~

Day 1 of Paris

Saying goodbye to England and my gracious host was not easy. The last two weeks have been wonderful and relaxing, and I couldn't have asked for better company. But, it was time to leave the island. I got up early, cleaned and packed, and Tash brought me down to the quay on the quad. I made sure to sit on the right side this time, seeing as the left side decided to rip two big holes in my new pants the last time I sat on it. I may need to replace those!

After two ferries, one overnight train, two subway cars and a Eurostar Chunnel train, I finally arrived in Paris! Finding my hostel was pretty quick and easy, but I had to wait to get into my room for a few hours. I stored my luggage in a locker for a couple hours and set out to wander the area around my hostel. I didn't really have any specific thing I was looking for on the walk, I was just familiarizing myself with the location. I ended up finding a local boulangerie to get some fresh bread and another place to buy some brie which I ate a little while later for lunch on a bench in a children's park. I stumbled upon some churches and cute neighbourhoods along the way and had a nice and easy stroll before heading back to my hostel.

I finally got to check in at 2 p.m. and take a much needed shower. It was so nice to have hot water for as long as I needed it! So refreshing! After showering, I took a well-deserved nap for three hours. I probably could have stayed in bed and slept through the night, but decided to make use of the rest of the night instead. I ended up walking around until about midnight, in the rain, and was so exhausted by the time I got back, but I managed to see a lot in that time. Here are some pictures of what I got to see.
